Smarter DIY Packaging: 4 tips for branding your Etsy products with labels and stickers

Dear makers,

It’s time to give yourself a little break.

Whew, someone had to say it. Etsy product makers are well known for their packaging outfits and for dressing handmade and vintage goodies with tons of love. But seriously, for all the things you (amazingly) manage to do in any given day, spending extra time on your brand’s packaging does not have to be one of them.

Sellers, allow me to introduce you to the wonderful world of custom stickers and labels, and some tips to go along with it.

1. Be smarter about DIY packaging

There’s always a lot to do and never enough hours in the day to do them, but using custom stickers and labels can make one thing about running your own brand a lot easier. Overzealous DIY-ing isn't doing you any favors; in fact, it could end up costing you more time and money than needed.

Don't ever feel like you have to overcompensate for not using custom-made branded packaging. Incorporating every DIY packaging idea in your product's outfit is not only time-consuming and costly, but can give it a 'too-busy' look (remember Kim Kardashian's infamous sofa dress from the 2013 Met Ball?), instead of an easy-on-the-eyes, polished appearance.

Trying to do too many things at once with your packaging also becomes an issue if you have to package a few orders at once (helloo Holiday season), because you only have so many hands. Gift wrapping, tying a perfect bow, hand-curling the ribbon, and setting the stamp on a hang-tag in perfect sequence gets a little more stressful after the 5th one in a row, and takes away time from creating what you love.

Using custom labels and stickers lets you still maintain your handmade, personal touch quality while ensuring a clean and professional look that solidifies your brand image. You strike the perfect balance of standing out from a boring corporate product as well as handmade mediocrity.

You can also spend more time focusing on brand exposure, by taking photos of your products and writing descriptions that show them off, setting up promotions, and maintaining all the listings in your shop. So much to do….and a little more time to do it.

2. Strut your stuff
Etsy is a sea of unique craftsmanship and handcrafting, and it’s easy to get lost in it. To stand out, include a picture of your product’s outfit and your beautiful packaging on your page and in your listing to foster customer anticipation, and let them know what to expect in the mail.

This can tell your customers a lot about your brand. Not only are you a transparent seller whose final good looks like its “pictured above” counterpart, but you are showing your customers that you are a professional business owner who deserves to be taken seriously, and looks pretty darn experienced at it.

Showing off your product's packaging is super useful during the holiday season or when customers are looking for gift items. You can easily (and inexpensively) create a small batch of special stickers for Christmas or Valentines gifts - labeling that they were made in Santa's workshop or sealed with Cupid's arrow. You can't NOT add a product to your shopping cart after seeing a picture of such irresistible packaging!

3. Bring your brand to life

Labels are a great way to share your brand’s story and let your customers get to know the incredible face behind your Etsy product. In addition to including your logo to every product, use a label to share the origins of your brand, or the inspiration behind your logo or aesthetic. Use this communication space to connect with your customers and further your brand message.

It doesn’t have to be a big label that takes up a lot of space. Some of you might have odd shaped products or small packaging, so you can pick a sticker size and shape that suits your style and include it somewhere on your packaging as a token reminder each time. Papyrus cards all include a beautiful message about their logo, the hummingbird, and its connection to their brand’s beliefs and vision. Make your customers remember you and why you do what you’re so great at.

In addition to talking about your brand, stickers can also be a great way to share bite-size information about your product, including general care instructions or how it was made. Stickers ensure the message is visible, easy-to-read, and keep on hand (literally)!

4. Make more friends

The success of your Etsy store and brand can be driven by your social skills. You want your customer’s friends, family, and pretty much their entire shindig to know about you. A recent study conducted by Dotcom Distribution discovered that 52% of consumers would likely repeat a purchase from an online merchant that delivers premium packaging (you!). The same study found that 4 in 10 shoppers would share a picture of a product delivery on social media if it came in unique packaging.

To increase your probability of being shared via social media, or even good ol’ word of mouth, leverage the use of your stickers and labels.

Stickers and labels are fantastic because they can also serve multiple purposes for your product. You can mix and match them, and have them complement one another with different designs. Use one label as an information piece, and include a sticker that invites your customers to give feedback, get in touch with you, or enter a contest for a freebie. A sticker with a coupon code that can be shared with friends and family is also a great way to introduce new faces to the delight that is your brand.

Go on – meet those new faces, they’ll love you!
