Creating an unforgettable unboxing experience for the customer

When thinking about making custom printed boxes, it is crucial to think about how your customers would react when opening it. Creating an unforgettable unboxing experience is an important aspect of any e-business, as it is the first experience your
customer has with your brand and your products.

For this post we’re focusing on the customer, and why their experience is crucial to your packaging design.

What do you want your customers to see when they first receive the box?
Design and Shipping: Think about whether you should have your logo on the top of the box or inside? Is your box easy to open? Do the paper wrappers or crinkle paper showcase your product, or take away from it? Having an outer box design and packaging is important, and avoiding complexity will make the opening experience smooth and easy.
What do you want your customers to do after they’ve received the package?

According to a 2014 article by Google, unboxing videos generated more than 20 million search results on YouTube, and “one in five consumers report that they’ve actually watched an unboxing video.”

With this in mind, how do you create a capturing custom box that will create a call to action for your customers? Here are some ideas to add onto your box:

Hashtags: Can be a good and effective way to get customers to share your box with others on social media.

Photo sharing: Will your media include any incentives for sharing a picture of the box? Try to think about how you can use the box to promote your business and generate brand awareness and more sales.

What do you want your customers to see when they first open the box?

What will be your centrepiece? What are the staples vs. samples you would want to include?

Notes and cards: What else do you want to include, outside of the product? Put some thought toward any personal notes or instructions that your customers may appreciate receiving.

Mystery box: This can be a cool option – have plain craft and discreet on the outside, while printed on the inside. Think about the graphics inside the box, as well as the composition of the items. For a clean and professional look, consider looking into custom product inserts.

Creating an unforgettable unboxing experience is all about selling your brand to your
customers, and building the anticipation for them to want to continue subscribing to and sharing your product(s) with their friends.
